Sources and licences
Our destination pages are built on open data. This page lists every provider we draw on, the licence that applies, and what we use it for. Two of these licences require attribution as a condition of use rather than as a courtesy, which is why this page exists as a permanent part of the site.

How we attribute
OpenStreetMap data is published under the Open Database Licence, which is share-alike. Every map we render carries the “© OpenStreetMap contributors” line inside the image itself and again as text beside it, and the destination pages that use OSM coordinates name it in their own source list.
Wikimedia Commons files carry no single licence: each one is CC0, CC BY or CC BY-SA on its own terms. We therefore print the photographer’s name and the exact licence under every photograph, and link to the file’s Commons page so the licence can be read in full.
Wikidata is released under CC0 and needs no attribution. We name it anyway, because knowing where a coordinate came from is part of what makes these pages checkable.
Photographs
We do not generate images of real places. Every photograph on a destination page is a real photograph of that place, taken from Wikimedia Commons, with its photographer, licence and source page recorded as structured data rather than as free text. Where we cannot verify the source page of a photograph, we do not publish the photograph.
