Perge

A flat Roman city laid out on a single long axis, with no shade anywhere on it. The walking is easy and that is exactly the trap.

Perge was the principal city of Pamphylia, and unlike most Anatolian sites it is laid out on one readable axis: a colonnaded street running north with a water channel down the middle of it, a Hellenistic gate with round towers at the south end, and a stadium beyond that.

The city has been excavated for decades and it produced an enormous quantity of sculpture. Almost none of it is here -- the finds are in the Antalya Museum, a forty-minute drive away.

Flat does not mean short

From the stadium to the Hellenistic gate is about 300 m. From the gate to the start of the colonnaded street is another 283 m, and the street itself runs a further 229 m to the nymphaeum at its head. The theatre sits 220 m south of the stadium, and the acropolis is 1.1 km north of it.

So the working visit is roughly 800 m in one direction and 800 m back, on open ground, in full sun. Groups underestimate flat sites because nothing looks like effort until they are standing at the far end with the walk still to do.

The water channel is the narration

The channel down the middle of the main street carried running water the length of the city. It is the one feature here that explains itself on sight, and it gives you something to point at that is not another column.

Use it as the spine of what you say. The street is long enough that a single stop at the bottom will not carry -- plan to talk at the gate, again at the middle, and once at the nymphaeum where the water came from.

Practical notes

  • The core route is about 800 m each way on flat, open ground.
  • There is no shade on the main street at any time of day.
  • The theatre is south of the stadium, outside the main circuit. As listed by the Ministry on 6 October 2026, it is temporarily closed to visitors until its restoration is finished.
  • The acropolis is 1.1 km north of the stadium and belongs to a longer visit.
  • The sculpture from Perge is in the Antalya Museum, not on site.

Notes for guides

What a guide needs to know before standing in front of a group here. Written from our own field work; where we have not verified something, it is not listed.

  • RouteStadium, Hellenistic gate, colonnaded street. One axis, out and back -- decide before you start whether the acropolis is in, because it adds 2.2 km.
  • TimingMorning. The street runs north-south with no shade on it, and the return leg is in the same sun as the outward one.
  • Being heardAn open colonnaded street with nothing overhead. Sound has nothing to reflect off and a group strung along 200 m of street cannot hear a voice at the front.
  • CrowdsThe street is wide, so the group spreads sideways as well as lengthways. Name a stopping point ahead rather than expecting people to gather where you stop.
  • TipSay early that the famous sculpture is in Antalya. It is the first question at the empty niches and it is better answered before it is asked.

Common questions

How long does a group need at Perge?
About two hours for the stadium, the Hellenistic gate and the colonnaded street -- roughly 800 m out and the same back. Adding the acropolis puts another 2.2 km on the day.
Is Perge a difficult site to walk?
It is flat and the surface is good, but it is long and completely unshaded. Groups tire on it faster than they expect because nothing feels like effort until the return leg.
Where is the sculpture found at Perge?
In the Antalya Museum, about forty minutes away. Very little of it remains on site, so say so before the group starts looking for it.
Is Perge a UNESCO World Heritage Site?
No. It has been on Turkey's tentative list since 2009 but it has not been inscribed.
