Pergamon Asklepion
The ancient world's most famous hospital, and the easiest ground in Bergama to guide on. After the acropolis it is flat, enclosed and forgiving — which is exactly why it should not come first.

The Asklepion was the most famous healing sanctuary of the ancient world. Patients came for water, sleep and suggestion: they were diagnosed from their dreams, they walked a tunnel while voices spoke to them from above, and they bathed in a spring that was the centre of the whole complex.
Galen — the physician whose ideas governed European medicine for fourteen centuries — began his career here as a doctor to gladiators. The sanctuary is part of the same 2014 UNESCO inscription as the acropolis on the hill above it.
The easiest ground in Bergama
Everything that makes the acropolis difficult is absent here. The site is level, it is compact, and it is bounded — a group cannot drift out of sight because there is nowhere for them to drift to.
That has one consequence worth planning around: the Asklepion is where you can afford your longest, most detailed explanation of the day. On the acropolis the terrain sets your pace; here you do.
The tunnel is the one exception
The incubation tunnel is the only enclosed space on the site, and it behaves like a museum room dropped into an open ruin. Sound is held and reflected instead of dispersing, so a group inside hears you clearly and hears everyone else clearly too.
It is also narrow. Thirty people enter it as a line, not a group, which means whoever is at the far end is out of sight the moment they step in. Say what you are going to say before they go in, and let the tunnel be an experience rather than a stop.
Why it belongs after the acropolis
Physically the Asklepion is the recovery half of the day, and the order matters more than it looks. Coming down from the terraces to level ground reads as relief; going up from level ground to the terraces reads as a climb the group did not agree to.
The story runs the same direction. The acropolis is the city that Pergamon showed the world; the Asklepion is what the city did for the people who arrived sick. Kings first, patients second.
Practical notes
- MüzeKart is valid at the Asklepion.
- The site is flat and compact, unlike the acropolis above it.
- It is part of the same UNESCO inscription as the acropolis (2014).
- The Red Basilica sits between the acropolis and the Asklepion, but the Ministry of Culture and Tourism listed it as closed on 6 October 2026: shut for landscaping works from 24 January 2025 until they are finished. Check before adding it to the day.
- There is little shade on the open ground between the colonnade and the spring.
The Asklepion is covered by the museum pass. Our museum cards page sets out which card covers what.
Walking order
The order we use, with the time each stop takes at a normal group pace.
The Sacred Way
The colonnaded processional approach. Patients arrived along this line, and so does your group.
The Sacred Spring
The water at the centre of the treatment. The open middle of the site, and the place a group naturally gathers.
The Incubation Tunnel
The vaulted passage to the treatment rooms — enclosed, dark and acoustically unlike anywhere else on site.
The Theatre
A small theatre inside the sanctuary — performance was part of the treatment, not an entertainment beside it.

Notes for guides
What a guide needs to know before standing in front of a group here. Written from our own field work; where we have not verified something, it is not listed.
- RouteDo the Asklepion after the acropolis. Level ground after terraces reads as relief; the reverse reads as an unannounced climb.
- Being heardThe tunnel holds sound instead of letting it disperse — the one enclosed space here. Say the explanation before the group goes in, because inside they are a line, not a circle.
- RouteThe site is bounded and level, so this is where the longest explanation of the day belongs. On the acropolis the terrain sets the pace; here you do.
- AccessThe tunnel is narrow. Thirty people become a single file at the entrance and the far end is out of sight immediately.
- TipGalen's connection is the detail that makes the site land for a modern group. Place it at the spring, where the treatment happened.

Common questions
- How long does a group need at the Pergamon Asklepion?
- About an hour and a half. The site is level and compact, so almost all of that time is narration rather than walking.
- Should the Asklepion come before or after the acropolis?
- After. Coming down from the terraces to flat ground reads as recovery, and the story runs the same way: the acropolis is what the city showed the world, the Asklepion is what it did for the sick.
- Is MüzeKart valid at the Asklepion?
- Yes. The Asklepion is on the Ministry of Culture and Tourism's museum pass list, so pass holders enter without a separate ticket.
- What was the incubation tunnel for?
- It was the vaulted passage patients walked toward the treatment rooms, with voices reaching them from openings above. It is the only enclosed space on the site and the acoustics are noticeably different inside it.
- Is the Asklepion a separate UNESCO site from the acropolis?
- No. Pergamon was inscribed in 2014 as a multi-layered cultural landscape and the Asklepion is one of the components of that single inscription.
