Guided group tours in Şanlıurfa: Göbeklitepe, the museum and the heat
Göbeklitepe had 781,381 visitors in 2025; the museum that holds its finds had 333,792. With Karahantepe and Harran listed as closed on 6 October 2026 and a July average high of 38.8 °C, a group day here is built around Göbeklitepe, the museum and the heat.
Şanlıurfa's group day rests on one pairing: the excavation at Göbeklitepe, seen from a walkway, and the archaeology museum in the city, where the finds are. This page fits everything else around those two; what to say at each site is on that site's own page.
When should a group come to Şanlıurfa?
Heat sets the calendar. The state meteorological service's long-term averages for Şanlıurfa (1929 to 2025) give average highs of 34.8 °C in June, 38.8 °C in July, 38.4 °C in August and 34.0 °C in September, against 22.4 °C in April, 28.8 °C in May and 27.1 °C in October. From December to March there are 10 to 12 rainy days a month.
Check what is open before choosing the month. On 6 October 2026 the Ministry listed Göbeklitepe, the archaeology museum and the Haleplibahçe mosaic museum as open every day, Göbeklitepe and the archaeology museum from 08:30 to 17:30 with tickets until 17:00. The same day it listed Karahantepe as closed and Harran as closed because of the earthquake, although the governorship had announced in July 2024 that Harran's Great Mosque was open again after repairs.
The crowd is at the excavation: by the governor's figures, Göbeklitepe had 781,381 visitors in 2025 and the archaeology museum 333,792.

OSRM car estimates (6 October 2026) between the coordinates on our site pages, with straight-line distances between the same points. Museum means the archaeology museum in the city; Göbeklitepe means the site's visitor centre, where the shuttle to the excavation starts. A coach is slower.
The museum and Göbeklitepe are the short pair. Harran is 41 minutes from the museum; Karahantepe adds more than an hour of driving each way through open country.
What does a guide's day look like?
The standard day is the pairing in this order: Göbeklitepe at 08:30, the museum at midday. Our planning time at Göbeklitepe is two hours, including the shuttle between the visitor centre and the excavation at both ends; the museum needs another two, not one. With the 24-minute drive between them the pair is done by about 13:00, and its second half is indoors.
Harran, once its status is confirmed, takes 90 minutes on open ground. In summer give it the start of a second day or the last part of the afternoon; the Ministry page lists its hours as 08:30 to 17:30, with tickets until 17:00. When Karahantepe reopens, it goes between the two halves of the standard day, after Göbeklitepe and before the museum: 75 minutes on site, and about 140 minutes of driving for the loop instead of 24.
Which tickets, cards and bookings does a group need?
Foreign visitors pay per site; Turkish citizens use MüzeKart, which the Ministry's pages list as valid at Göbeklitepe and the museums. These are the foreign visitor prices in the Ministry's February 2026 directive, charged in lira at the previous day's central bank rate:
| Site | Foreign visitor |
|---|---|
| Göbeklitepe | €20 |
| Göbeklitepe, Karahantepe and the reconstruction centre at Göbeklitepe | €21 combined, valid for 72 hours from first use |
| Haleplibahçe museum | €10 |
| Karahantepe, Harran | free |
The directive does not price the archaeology museum under its own name, and its list of Ministry sites gives the archaeology museum and the Haleplibahçe mosaic museum as a single entry, so confirm at the gate whether one ticket covers both buildings.
There is no regional Museum Pass for south-eastern Türkiye. Museum Pass Türkiye (€165, 15 days) covers the sites on this page and cannot be sold to Turkish citizens; card choices for a mixed group are on our MüzeKart and Museum Pass pages.
The directive also sets three entry rules for groups:
- Groups of 40 or more notify the museum directorate in advance and enter by appointment.
- A-group travel agencies must use the Agency Card (Acente Kart) at group entry; the account is opened through the Ministry's agency portal.
- Licensed working guides enter on the Guide Card (Rehber Kart), which also carries MüzeKart+ rights.
What changes for the group from one stop to the next?
The two halves of the standard day set opposite problems. At Göbeklitepe the group stands on a walkway it may not leave, strung out almost in single file around the enclosures, and you cannot gather it; the canopy carries your voice and the next group's alike. In the museum the group can stand in a circle again and the limit becomes the room, with its hard surfaces and other groups. Harran and Karahantepe are open ground without shade, where a group spreads instead of lining up, so name a landmark as the regroup point before people scatter.
Do not plan on mobile data at Göbeklitepe: when we ran a live audio broadcast there, the site had no internet connection at all and the system ran on a local network from a pocket router.

Common questions
- Is Karahantepe open to visitors?
- On 6 October 2026 the Ministry's page listed it as closed, with no reopening date; the February 2026 directive had listed it as closed until 31 January 2026. Check the page again and confirm access with the Şanlıurfa museum directorate before building it into a day.
- How far is Şanlıurfa from Mount Nemrut and Zeugma?
- From the archaeology museum, the Nemrut visitor reception centre is 176 km by road, about 2 hours 20 minutes by car, and the Zeugma archaeological site 95 km (OSRM, 6 October 2026). Zeugma lies almost on the way to Gaziantep: 95 km to the site and 55 km on to the Zeugma Mosaic Museum, against 147 km direct.
- Can Rumkale be reached from Şanlıurfa?
- Rumkale is in Gaziantep, but one of its two boat departure points, Halfeti, is in Şanlıurfa, 128 km from the archaeology museum by road (OSRM, 6 October 2026). On the same day the Ministry listed Rumkale itself as closed.
